Ultrasound examination

Ultrasound examination (sonography) is an imaging procedure used to examine organic tissue. It is the most frequently used imaging procedure in medicine. In the field of urology, sonography is particularly suitable for diagnosing pathological changes in the kidneys, bladder, testicles and epididymis. The adrenal gland and the ureter are usually not visible on ultrasound. Organs containing gas, such as the lungs and intestines, as well as bone, are also generally difficult to examine using ultrasound. The prostate has a special position and, if necessary, is examined during transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) with an endoprobe that is inserted into the anus.

Sonography is used for the early detection, diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. The aim is to detect possible changes in organs and tissues at an early stage so that appropriate treatment can be initiated. In urology in particular, sonography can be used to detect and treat pathological changes at an early stage.

The ultrasound examination uses sound waves to produce images of internal organs and tissues. This method is non-invasive, risk-free and painless, as no dangerous radiation is used. Sonography can therefore also be used in pregnant women.

During a sonographic examination, the doctor places an ultrasound probe on the skin in the region of the organ to be examined. The ultrasound probe is first coated with a contact gel, such as InstillaGel® Lubri, to ensure good sound transmission. The examination can take several minutes, as the organs are examined in individual layers. The sound waves generate images from inside the body, which the doctor views on a monitor. Possible changes can be detected and documented directly during the examination.

Summary

Ultrasound examination is an essential, risk-free and painless diagnostic method in medicine, especially in urology. It enables pathological changes in the kidneys, bladder, testicles and epididymis to be detected early and treated. The examination is quick and effective and can also be carried out in pregnant women.
